Short Bio

Gilda-Nancy Horvath is journalist, writer/rapper, project manager, and communications consultant.

She started her career in A grassroots NGO project  that is still active in Vienna – THARA – for the Romani community in Vienna, Austria.

Soon after, she started working for the Austrian Public National Broadcaster ORF.

She produced more than 300 magazines of „Radio Kaktus“ between 2006 and 2016. Radio Kaktus was an audio-format for the German speaking Romani and Sinti Community in Europe  with a mix of news, culture, arts and music topics.  After this she presented the TV Magazin „Servus Szia Zdravo Del tuha“ on ORF2 Burgenland.

She has also written numerous articles for the Romani cause (see some below this bio) and worked with many international projects connected to Romani activism, art, and politics.

After 10 years in front of and behind the camera at ORF, she started educating and qualifying young Romani people in her project: “romblog.at,” where she is the Editor-In-Chief.

Other stuff:

She has an artist alter ego named Nancy Black – a writer of romani poetry and rapsongs

She produced her first song in December 2016, after being threatened by people who had spread false information about Roma in the media; The false information: they claimed that all Roma in Austria would give their support to the far-right candidate at the Presidential Elections in Austria on 04 December 2016. – which was FAKE NEWS. Horvath protested against this kind of manipulation and became a target of hate speech and defamation after that.

Her rasping Song and Video “Trushula” was a clear answer; this was the day Nancy Black was born. Nancy Black also produces video mixes, video installations, and digital/visual art and writing texts and poetry with a strong connection to the language Romanes and the situation of Romani people.

„Journalism in times of isolation“ | Online-Discussion

Kadir van Lohuizen shares a conversation with Wladimir van Wilgenburg and Shahidul Alam and Gilda Horvath. – „The world is in an extraordinary state at the moment. The measures against COVID-19 not only affects our day-to-day interaction but also has consequences for the way we consume international stories, news and images. Photographers, journalists, writers and filmmakers around the world are being restricted because of the pandemic. Every Wednesday at 16:00h (CET) three guests will give an insight in their work, their own communities and surroundings. How can we keep being informed and hold a broad perspective?“

Why we need Romani Media

Synopsis of the presentation of this video and the speech of Gilda-Nancy Horvath at the #EU2018 Conference on Antygypsiysm in Vienna:

Violence and Hate Crimes against Romani People are arising in many countries … but how does Media reflect this incidences? And why Romani people are only shown in the media when there is some negative story to push fears and hate? There are some well developing Romani Media-Producers in Europe, but also in the USA or in Kanada that are doing a great job in reporting, reflecting and sharing information about human rights violations and how they are handled,by politics, media and NGO´s. Namely I would like to highlight the great work of European Roma Rights Center (ERRC), Romea.cz; DROMA; Radio Patrin or Radio Romano Sweden (and many others) They should unite and aggregate their news on a shared information portal – accessible to those media producers on the basis of a code of ethics on shared values and guidelines for published material. The first step is easy: Simply allow your Romani Media colleagues to share your news on their blogs and channels. they simply do not forget to name your outlet as source. very easy. just another WordPress page away from Reality.
